Inaugurating Excellence: The Genesis and Growth of the California State Science Fair
On April 19-20, 1952, the inaugural science fair west of the Mississippi River unfolded in Los Angeles, marking the commencement of a transformative journey that now defines the official Science Fair of the State of California.
The roots of this influential event trace back to the fall of 1951 when a visionary group from the California Science Teachers’ Association, inspired by student accomplishments highlighted in the National Science Fair, established the Southern California Science Fair. Under the leadership of Miss Gretchen Sibley, who transitioned from Treasurer to Executive Director after its incorporation, the Fair saw its inaugural edition on the second floor of the Natural History Museum. Noteworthy for hosting judges, including Nobel Prize winners Carl Anderson, Edwin McMillan, and Glenn Seaborg, the first Fair garnered widespread attention, notably from the Los Angeles Times and television coverage by Ralph Storey on KTTV.
Over the years, the Fair’s growth has been propelled by the support of participants, judges, sponsors, and the public. From securing long-term sponsorship from the National Association of Manufacturers in 1955 to relocating to the California Science Center in 1959, the Fair has continued to stimulate and support science projects throughout the entire state.
Acknowledged as the de facto State Science Fair by the late 1970s, it officially gained recognition as the Official Science Fair of the State of California in 1990 through Assembly Concurrent Resolution 141. Today, with increased competition and participation, the State Science Fair remains committed to its foundational goals, encouraging students across every region in the state to explore science through their own projects and recognizing their achievements along with the dedication of their mentors.
